field trip - birling gap

recording the eroding cliffs from 2018 to 2024

coastal erosion, rising tides, cliffs crumbling into the sea

this field trip was to my local Sussex coast in 2018 with a plan to work on location using the chalk from the cliffs and earth pigments to mono print and make rubbing - the results became the starting point for working with the grey/black/white/blue palette that I use to this day

back in the studio working with fabric and stitch samples from the beach

returning regularly since, I have witnessed the rapid erosion of the cliffs from higher tides that are  undercutting the cliffs resulting in severe cliffs falls and the subsequent implementation of a sea defence programme using tons of large pebbles which have sadly buried the beautiful chalk rock pools and changed the Seven Sisters coastal beach.
